INDEPENDENT MONITORING BOARDS FOR NORTHERN IRELAND
UNDER SECTION 10 OF THE PRISON ACT (NI) 1953 AND SECTION 3 OF THE TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS ACT (NI) 1968

The Secretary of State intends to make appointments to the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB) for prisons in Northern Ireland. The Boards are required to:

  • satisfy themselves regarding the treatment of prisoners, the state of the prison premises and the facilities available to prisoners to allow them to make purposeful use of their time;
  • consider requests and complaints made by prisoners; and
  • report matters of concern.

Requirements

In selecting persons for appointment as members of an IMB the Secretary of State will require the following skills and attributes;

  • good communication skills;
  • an ability to assess situations and draw conclusions;
  • an ability to establish relationships; and
  • the ability to carry out the full range of statutory duties throughout the prison establishments.

Applications are welcomed from all sections of the community irrespective of their religious belief, gender, disability, race, political opinion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, or whether or not they have dependants.

These are unpaid voluntary positions although all travelling expenses will be paid at the standard government rate.

Due to the location of the prison establishments access to a form of transport is desirable.

It may be necessary to prepare a shortlist from the list of eligible applicants. It is therefore important that all applicants demonstrate in their application form the extent to which they meet the requirements.
