March 2010
Following the devolution of policing and justice on 12 April 2010 the Independent Monitoring Boards became an arms-length body of the devolved Department of Justice. As such, the Boards will report to the Justice Minister instead of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

March 2009
On 31 March 2009, the Independent Monitoring Boards became part of the United Kingdom National Preventative Mechanism (UK NPM) as required by the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

August 2005
The Boards of Visitors and Visiting Committee of Prisons and the Young Offenders Centre in Northern Ireland changed their name to Independent Monitoring Boards for Northern Ireland with effect from 20 August 2005. The name change was endorsed by Ministers and the Criminal Justice Review which brought about a number of changes to Prison Rules in Northern Ireland. This reflected equivalent changes to the role and names of the Boards of Visitors in England and Wales.
